I recently 3D printed the Lady Shura pin-up miniature from Ronin Arts Workshop and was excited to work on this excellent model with oil paints. But what really took this project to the next level was the addition of a diorama base. My goal was to create a watery base for Lady Shura to tread through and what better way to achieve that than with a tinted resin pour?
Work In Progress
I first tackled the painting process, focusing on the skin tones. I wanted to make sure that the skin was vibrant and lifelike, and I was thrilled with the results. To add an extra layer of realism, I incorporated a slight reflection on the skin coming from what would be the water later on… After getting the painting done I affixed the model to a base I created and prepared it for the resin pour.
Resin Pour...
Unfortunately, my initial resin pour did not turn out as planned. The resin ratio was incorrect, resulting in a failed cure. With some patience and lots of IPA I was able to clean off the resin that failed to cure and pour another layer. Next time I do a resin pour I’ll have to get some silicone rubber for a mold. While the tape pictured above mostly worked, there was a little bit of leakage and the shape of the edges did not come out smooth.
The Completed Model
This project was a lot of fun with challenges and triumphs. I learned a lot about resin pouring and oil painting, and I am so proud of the final result. Lady Shura is now a stunning piece that will join the collection of other miniatures I have painted and I’m looking forward to my next project!
